Connection to Fraser Valley: I grew up in Langley and graduated high school from R.E. Mountain Secondary School. My family still lives in Langley (mom, younger sis, cousins, aunt & uncle, and paternal grandparents). I visit Langley often to see them. Also my partner's family lives in Abbotsford so I'm out there a lot too.
I’m queer, nonbinary, and femme, and musicians I hire for my live sets are usually queer, femme, &/or nonbinary as well. My act engages the crowd and I often talk to my audience or involve them in some way, e.g. singalongs, passing my sunglasses around, shout & response. In an industry long dominated by men, especially cis straight white men, being none of those things makes me stand out 😛 My act is also very stylish, as I handpick the outfits myself and make sure any accompanying musicians are colour coordinated. I also write and sing in both Mandarin and English, and I share knowledge of my culture, including from my maternal side of the family – my maternal family speaks Sichuan Hua, not Mandarin, but it was Mandarin that was taught in schools, enforced by the Chinese government, etc.
